MARTIN McWILLIAM
The British/German Martin McWilliam (1957) is an internationally praised artist living in Germany.
Martin describes his work as "Clay - Water - Wood - Fire – Space”.
These five elements are brought together into a entirely to create a "trompe-l’Oeil-like" work, apparently dug or revealed from an archaeological point of view.
His ceramic work revolves around the “Bowl and Jar”; characterized by the meeting with aesthetics of the Japanese tea ceremony[MM1] .
McWilliam is immensely interested in the great cultural shift when our ancestors started to store and share food in simple clay pots.
He uses the simple vessel as a starting point.
“I have been pleased lately to notice the change in the approach to the restoration of pots in museums.
Instead of trying to close missing areas, with plaster and attempts to colour - missing shards are simply omitted, the space is left to the imagination to fill. This has to my glass mounted objects, "said McWilliam.
His newest stoneware and porcelain work is characterized by glass uprights which separate the pot fragments. This depicts the merger of the old and modern times, archaeology and the now.
